HAZLITT 1852 VINEYARDS WELCOMES FRENCH WINEMAKER
Bordeaux Specialist Joins Award-winning Winery for 2008 Harvest
Hector, NY (August 29, 2008) — Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards is pleased to welcome Stefan Meadow to its winemaking team, effective September 2008. Stefan is an experienced Bordeaux Institut d’OEnologie enologist and proprietor of his own property - Chateau Pergeat - just north of Pauillac, France. In addition to his own vineyard, Stefan has been a member of winemaking teams at Chateaux Vieux Landon in Medoc, Coudert-Pelletan in St. Emilion and Batailey et Lynch-Moussas in Pauillac.
American born, Stefan has been making wine in France for over a decade. He’ll be collaborating with Hazlitt winemaker Tim Benedict and his team in refining winemaking techniques at the established Finger Lakes winery.
“I’m glad to be here,” says Stefan, “and am looking forward to a fruitful collaboration. In that regard, I’m planning to apply vinification methods both old and new to enhance, sophisticate or simply preserve the intrinsic quality of the grapes grown in this part of the world. One thing is certain – the shalestone soil I see here shows promise for the wines. It’s not the same as we have in the Medoc, but there are more similarities with the Bordeaux terroir than differences.”
‘We’re happy to have Stefan here,’ added Tim. “We’re eager to bring our winemaking skills together to make the best Finger Lakes wines possible.”
The Finger Lakes wine region is renowned for producing some of the finest varietals, particularly Riesling. With Stefan’s addition, the winery has taken a decisive step to harmonize the best of French winemaking with local grape varieties and conditions to build and improve on its award-winning estate wines.
